The massive wood house at Sele

In the southwest coast of Norway in the midst of the farmland we found this site. The place used to be a part of the school yard that belonged to the local school at Sele.

This house was my school project that I made in the 6. semester at Fiuni school of architecture + design, for my husband and I.

The projekt is about sustainability, and is based on natural materials and the cradle to cradle principle with the building as part of the ongoing ecological circle.

A healty environment inside is also a big part of how we wanted to build this house, I believe that a breathable construction is crucial to achieve this. This was easy to do with the massive wood.

With the diffrent climate zones, passive sun energy as part of the heating system and the thick solid wooden walls the house is left needing little energy. We are also exited to get the sun collector started -this will give hot water to floors and tap water. In winter time we use wood for the rest of the heating needed.

The plan is flexible and adjustable to different life phases, witch is important when life changes.

The regulation for this area says gable roof, this was leading me to play with it and twist it. At the same time as I was playing with the roof I was looking for a possibility to have a sun collector on the roof. The body of the building is stretching long towards light and view in south west and with the modified gable roof it also gives a good angle for the sun collector.

This is my first time as an architect on a project that is built. Montasje as has done the construction with the massive wood, the insulation and some of the innerwalls. With help from Bjerga bygg as and Øystein Vierli we have done the rest of the work with the carpenting. With a lot of help from family we have also done the work with the interior. A big thanks to everyone that has contributed to this project; my teachers, friends, family and neighbors.
